About This Spot

Stepping into Da Filippo Autentica Cucina Italiana feels a little like entering a cherished family tradition tucked quietly within Somerville’s lively main street. The restaurant’s unassuming exterior gently gives way to a warm, inviting room where the pace softens and the hum of friendly conversation blends with subtle notes of Italian melodies. There’s an unmistakable sense of care here — in the way the staff moves thoughtfully through the space, and in the small details that foster a feeling of genuine welcome.

This is a place where authentic Sicilian flavors are served with an approachable, heartfelt touch. The menu invites leisurely exploration, offering dishes that balance rustic homeliness with refined touches. It’s in the glow of house-made bread, the bright freshness of bruschetta, and rich, comforting plates where seafood, fresh burrata, or risotto come alive without pretense. The food feels personal, like a shared secret meant to be savored slowly, alongside warm smiles and easy conversation.

There’s a comforting intimacy to the atmosphere, from the attentive owners to the cozy seating arrangements. It’s the kind of spot where strangers might find themselves sharing a moment over a perfectly pulled cappuccino or lingering over a dessert that strikes the perfect balance between indulgence and simplicity. Here, the outside world fades, replaced by the rhythms of Italian hospitality and the joy of discovery in every bite.

For those seeking a quiet, genuine experience steeped in tradition yet accessible, Da Filippo offers a subtle celebration of food’s ability to bring people together — unhurried, authentic, and quietly uplifting.

Amazing food and ambiance. Owners are very friendly and knowledgeable. Chef played piano for us while we were there. Eggplant very good and sauce impeccable. Clams and escargot.

We were looking for a new place to dine to to celebrate a milestone birthday and selected this place based on reviews . As we got to the place we were all in doubt and speculated if we should go in . But our speculation turned out to being a spectacular find. Don't be in doubt by the inconspicuous location and outside . Walk in to discover some authentic Italian ( Sicilian ) food. A home style restaurant with cozy yet spacious quarters with an old world Italian charm. An engaging couple Chef Filippo Russo and his wife are the owners. They clearly love food and entertaining. This place was opened in 1988 making it the oldest Italian restaurant in Somerville . Bertha (Berti) who is the Chef Russo’s wife was the hostess and our server . She is a bundle of energy and kept us entertained with her charm and warmth. We tried quite a few items and loved every one of them as it offered something special . Octopus in red sauce - tender and saucy Fried arugula with Parmesan and cream sauce, you will want more Their Bruschetta is one a kind - MUST TRY Shrimp pasta was our groups pick of the day and it didn't disappoint. Jumbo shrimp with semolina pasta and peas. I picked the fresh cavateli with marinara and sausage - I highly recommend it . Pan seared Mahi Mahi was delicately flavored well seasoned with fresh flavors. Profiterole and Millefoglie were our desserts.Profiterole was the star and we ordered a 2nd one to satisfy our greed . Chef & Owner Filippo Russo played the piano and sang for the guests and a special birthday wish for our table top . He is Sicilian and his food reflected the fresh flavors of the island . Overall this place stole our hearts in every aspect. The food , ambiance , the owners.. it is a place to celebrate with family and friends.

Thank you for such a warm and memorable meal!! Such a lovely experience from authentic Sicilian cuisine we felt like we were back in Palermo to the one of a kind hospitality. The reviews here say it all. Wish them many many years here and can’t wait to bring my family. Simply unique in all the ways. Chef has such a beautiful singing voice too. What a treat to have him play songs for us. Made us feel so lucky to live close to Somerville
